Single-Session Counselling

What is Single-Session Counselling?

Single-Session Counselling is an opportunity to meet with a University of Winnipeg counsellor to tackle specific issues within a single meeting. This model is created with the understanding that sometimes, a single, well-timed conversation is just what is needed to facilitate change or offer support. It typically has a shorter waiting time than ongoing counselling and is a great option for when you need to touch-base with a counsellor but do not require traditional ongoing counselling.

A single session may be the right fit for you if:

  • You have a specific problem/concern you want to discuss but you can’t figure out what to do about it
  • You are generally action-oriented and are looking for solutions you can implement now
  • You do not have access to a counsellor already
  • You do not want ongoing scheduled counselling

A single session is helpful at addressing issues like:

  • A conflict with a partner, family member and/or friend
  • A difficult decision or choice
  • Stress about balancing the demands of your academic life
  • Procrastination
  • Help strategizing a tough conversation
  • Worry and homesickness

How it Works:

Appointments are available to be booked up to 3 days in advance and are on a “first come-first served” basis.  Once you request an appointment you will receive an email confirmation of the appointment.  Please ensure you have a confirmation before attending your appointment.  Appointments are offered via zoom, phone or in-person at the Student Wellness Centre.

How do I schedule a session?

Single sessions do not require a phone evaluation and can be scheduled at your convenience.

What if I need more than one session?

Single sessions are not designed to replace traditional short-term counselling or long-term therapy. If you need several appointments with a counsellor to dig into your concerns and develop effective coping strategies, consider phoning or emailing Counselling Services - see Contact Us
